Andy's 1935 Ford Truck
People frequently ask me about the beginning of my pottery business and how I got started making pots. When I was a senior in high school in 1972, I studied with League of New Hampshire Craftsmen Jane Kaufmann and Wayland Bunnell. Jane shared her enthusiasm for creativity and Wayland taught me to center and spin a well-formed pot.

At the University of New Hampshire, I studied with Clint Thornton and mixed clay for Jun Kaenko. I learned about kilns from Dave McAllister and built a climbing wood-fired kiln under his guidance at Franklin Pierce College.

About the same time, I was peddling “Pottery by Andy” from a cart. Whenever I had a supply of pots, I'd head for Main Street in Durham to sell them. I peddled out of four different vehicles, but there weren't any that made me more proud than my 1935 Ford truck.

I set up three studios before settling into the old Boston & Maine Engine House in Dover in 1983. The shift from Pottery by Andy to Salmon Falls Stoneware came in 1986 as the business continued to grow from a one-man operation to a real production pottery.

Today my staff works with me at the Engine House to produce a line of first-rate salt-glaze pottery recognized across the country for its outstanding quality. In addition to the potters, who spin the pots, and the decorators, who draw the designs, there’s a support staff of hard-working folks who mix the clay and assist in production. They load, fire, and unload the kilns; sand and grade the finished product; and finally ship it out the door. They answer the phones, run the office, and clerk in the store. They’re an integral part of Salmon Falls ongoing success.

If you are in the area, we hope you will stop by. We will be happy to ship or paper wrap your items if you want to take them with you. We hope to see you soon. Best wishes.
